Sources and deposition of reactive gaseous mercury in the marine atmosphere

چکیده
Observations of reactive gaseous mercury (RGM) in marine air show a consistent diurnal cycle with minimum at night, rapid increase at sunrise, maximum at midday, and rapid decline in afternoon. We use a box model for the marine boundary layer (MBL) to interpret these observations in terms of RGM sources and sinks. The morning rise and midday maximum are consistent with oxidation of elemental mercury (Hg) by Br atoms, requiring <2 ppt BrO in most conditions. Oxidation of Hg by Br accounts for 35–60% of the RGM source in our model MBL, with most of the remainder contributed by oxidation of Hg0 by ozone (5–20%) and entrainment of RGM-rich air from the free troposphere (25–40%). Oxidation of Hg0 by Cl is minor (3–7%), and oxidation by OH cannot reproduce the observed RGM diurnal cycle, suggesting that it is unimportant. Fitting the RGM observations could be achieved in the model without oxidation of Hg0 by ozone (leaving Br as the only significant oxidant) by increasing the entrainment flux from the free troposphere. The large relative diurnal amplitude of RGM concentrations implies rapid loss with a lifetime of only a few hours. We show that this can be quantitatively explained by rapid, masstransfer-limited uptake of RGM into sea-salt aerosols as HgCl3 and HgCl4 2 . Our results suggest that 80– 95% of HgII in the MBL should be present in sea-salt aerosol rather than gas-phase, and that deposition of sea-salt aerosols is the major pathway delivering Hg to the ocean. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Concentration of Mercury in Selected Tissues of the Caspian Lamprey (Caspiomyzon wagneri) Migrants in Spawning Season
Background: Mercury (Hg) is considered a global pollutant because Hg0 which is the predominant form of atmospheric Hg resides in the atmosphere for as long as 0.5 to 2 years. Mercury has many negative effects on the reproductive, respiratory, and immune systems. Methods: In this study, 24 Caspian lampreys (Caspiomyzon wagneri) were transported to the university laboratory and then stored in ...
متن کاملMercury wet deposition in the eastern United States: characteristics and scavenging ratios.
Wet deposition is an important atmospheric mercury (Hg) pathway between air and terrestrial ecosystems. It is measured at numerous locations in the United States (U. S.) as part of the Mercury Deposition Network (MDN). The annual Hg wet deposition flux in 2009 at four locations in the northeastern U. S. (MDN sites MD08, VT99, NY20, and NY43) ranged from 6.4 to 13.4 μg per m(2) year which is hig...

Gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) and reactive gaseous mercury (RGM) were measured during an eight month circumnavigation to obtain knowledge of their worldwide distributions in the marine boundary layer (MBL). Background GEM concentrations were found to be 1.32 ± 0.2 ng/m(3) (summer) and 2.62 ± 0.4 ng/m(3) (spring) in the northern hemisphere and 1.27 ± 0.2 ng/m(3) (spring and summer) in the sout...
متن کاملEstimation and mapping of wet and dry mercury deposition across northeastern North America.
Whereas many ecosystem characteristics and processes influence mercury accumulation in higher trophic-level organisms, the mercury flux from the atmosphere to a lake and its watershed is a likely factor in potential risk to biota. Atmospheric deposition clearly affects mercury accumulation in soils and lake sediments. Thus, knowledge of spatial patterns in atmospheric deposition may provide inf...
